As a great expanse of limestone carved into a mature, streamless karst, the White Peak should be riddled with cave systems. But it is not. Every rule has its exception, and the limestone hills behind Castleton contain a long and spectacular cave system â because the immediate topography and geology are just right. Across the rest of the White Peak, known caves are few and far between, but they are still essential components of the karst landscape. And there are undoubtedly many more that remain unseen and unexplored.
